Human Rights Movie Nights
Past Screenings for 2008:
June 25th — Celebrating World Environment Day. HRP screened two films: "City of Water" and "Toxic & Treasures". "City of Water," a documentary created by the Metropolitan Waterfront Alliance and the Municipal Art Society, explores the dreams of community activists, public officials, environmentalists, and ordinary New Yorkers who envision a vibrant, inclusive, and truly accessible waterfront at a time when the shoreline is receded by large scale redevelopment efforts and environmental injustice. “Toxic & Treasures,” a short documentary made by WEACT, exposes the damage caused by environmentally hazardous facilities in Northern Manhattan communities of color. Representatives from Metropolitan Waterfront Alliance, Sustainable South Bronx and WEACT were in attendance to discuss environmental problems affecting their communities.
May 29th — Celebrating Diversity in Immigration. HRP screened "Crossing Arizona," a documentary that examines the issues arising from the U.S. and Mexico border. An estimated 4,500 undocumented migrants cross the border into the Arizona desert on a daily basis. The harsh conditions of the journey have led thousands to their deaths. Representatives from the May 1st Coalition were in attendance to talk about their work, and the steps that advocates should take to support immigrant and workers rights.
April 24th — Celebrating World Health Day. HRP screened "Sicko", the Michael Moore documentary that looks at the state of health care in the United States.
March 21st — Celebrating International Women's Day and the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. HRP screened "Chisholm '72: Unbought and Unbossed," which documents Brooklyn Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm (1924-2005) and her quest to secure the Democratic Party's presidential nomination in 1972.
